Phrasal verbs – make

Make up means to be reconciled. Example: I haven't made up with Alex yet after our fight. Second meaning is invent. Example: You should be a writer, you make up such good stories. Third meaning is comprise. Example: The cast was made up of amateurs.
make up for means to compensate. Example: He bought me dinner to make up for being so late the day before.
make out means see, hear. Example: I can't make out the sign from this far away. Second meaning is pretend. Example: Liam tried to make out that he was sick but he was not. Third meaning is kiss, example: I saw Carly and Kevin making out.
make off means leave quickly. Example: The criminals abandoned their vehicle and made off on foot. Make off with means steal. They made off with 13 pictures.
make for means head towards. Example: We turned the boat around and made for the nearest harbour. Second meaning is produce, create. Example: Good teamwork makes for greater productivity. Third meaning is count as. Example: That reply makes for a good example of sarcasm.
